How to Fish in the Wind

Brian takes apart a lot of what anglers say about wind. He starts with what wind does to a lake: it slows or speeds up the natural current, dims the light below the surface, dirties the water, and on big open lakes like Okeechobee it can push one side a foot higher than the other. He explains why wind does not blow the bait to one bank. Baitfish can swim against any current and plankton is everywhere, but the dimmer light brings plankton and bait higher, so a windblown point that already holds bait can fish better. He covers why stained water helps on clear reservoirs and hurts on shallow, grass and Florida lakes, how wind-driven high or low water moves bass, and how wind speeds up the fall turnover and slows spring warming. Then the practical side: the four hard baits he ties on when it is windy (a squarebill, a lipless crankbait, a chatterbait and a jerkbait), why to point the bow into the wind, when the wind at your back works, and the boat tools that help, above all a 60 inch trolling motor shaft.
