Don’t pull into the spool too hard to pick the mess out 

Don’t make a cast with a loop in the spool

Don’t let the line drop inside the boat when picking out the back lash if possible. It grabs hooks and everything else and just makes more mess. Try to strip the line into the water if possible. The water will lessen the tangles.

I’m the same way. If I can tie it and it works I stick with it. I’ll probably learn the FG at some point. 

During the post spawn the bass just bite bigger baits better. I really don’t know why that is but my best guess is they can digest it better during the higher water temps. All I know is generally speaking a bigger bait tends to be better during the post spawn. Finesse (smaller) lures tend not to produce as many bites for me
