Your thumb is doing all the work. light touch and progressive stop the spool as it hits the water. Try different pressures with your thumb. Once the bait hits the water the spool should mostly be stopped by your thumb. 

I have Lowrance graphs and the Lowrance iPhone/iPad app is great. It can be used without the graphs. However, if you have Lowrance and the app you can research the lake and add waypoints from your house, then connect your Lowrance HDS or Live graphs to your internet and sync those waypoints to your graph. This allows you to do homework in the house and then have those waypoints on the water. You can also save those waypoints from the Lowrance app to a file and put them on the SDCard and you graph can read it that way too. I nerd out about this kind of stuff.

I have to finish 7th or better in the championship for AOY. In a small club that is doable but you never know.
