Birds are your friend

Last summer , we did a family vacation to on Claytor Lake in southwest Virginia. I wasn’t sure how much I would be able to fish so I didn’t look up much on the lake I had never been there. It rained for two days before I finally got out in the early evening. The section of water I was on was narrow and very deep drop offs. There was some docks but hardly any obvious structures visible. This was very clear water with 6 foot visibility in places. Way outside my norm of shallow, stained, grassy Potomac River. I found a small cove that had a log across the middle of it  and I knew there should be a bass. I slow rolled a white spinnerbait over it and dropped it after the log. Wham!!! The fight was on! I had him good and in my excitement I stepped on the trolling motor and pushed the boat towards to the log. Now the fish got under the log and was hung up. I saw the big bass and tried to get him out. Once I grabbed his tail he shook off the spinnerbait. One small crappie during the next 2 day

Thank you for the information. This past year has been a learning experience for me and your thoughts have opened up my eyes to why bass are caught. Profiles, structure, understanding the nature of bass and areas fished are more important that what “magical” lure you are casting.

I now catch bass in the summertime with “red” crankbaits. Use deep diving crankbaits for my PB smallmouth out of the St Lawrence River. Plus, I use a spinnerbait in the wintertime for cold muddy water. 🤯

New thoughts , big results.
