Looks like another day of counting my lures with winter weather coming into Virginia.

I got out today at Lake Anna in central Virginia with the forecast sunny and 50 degree air temperature. Ramp still had ice but a lane was opened from launch to the open water near by. We targeted two areas. An island with a shallow shelf and a deep drop off point. Then several points from two coves that had steep drop off channels. Upon arrival, we observed the seagulls diving after the bait. We thought we were in! For the next two hours, we threw everything at the bait fish but no bites from bass or stripers. The seagulls continued and we could see the bait in their mouths. We threw lipless, crankbaits, spinnerbaits, wake baits, chatterbaits, Alabama rigs, scrounger, underspins and swim baits. No bites in the 39 degree water. Still glad I got out and was on the water. 😀
I think the deer know that I don’t hunt so they hang out in my front yard. BLat slung me some tips on how to improve my grass so they may like that also.
Our fishing club has released the 2025 Tournament schedule. We are from Northern Virginia and a majority of the tournaments are on the Potomac River. This year we do have tournaments on Kerr Reservoir and Lake Gaston on the NC border. Smith Mountain Lake in southwest Virginia along with Lake Anna and Chickahominy River in central Virginia. Our club is unique with low membership ($35) and $10 tournament fees that go to support two free kid’s fishing derbies. We share how we caught fish and what structure type but not location. There is no real money to win but that doesn’t mean they are not competitive. I have been a co-angler for 3 years and I would encourage everyone to join a fishing club because you learn so much. Most clubs are in desperate need for co-anglers as I find a ride easily. Plus, I meet boaters that I get to bonus fish outside of tournaments. Website link below and my email if you are interested.
So I’m working on snow/ice on my gravel driveway and I noticed this that relates to fishing. Our temperature this week have been below freezing all day long but mostly sunny. So the gravel still heats up and is melting the frozen snow. Each day we are getting a fraction more daylight so imagine why the fish like rock in cold water. As long as the sun can reach the rock in the waterway it will heat up no matter the water temperature. The bigger the rock surface the more heat potential. Be intentional when fishing!
