Congrats on the catches! Some bump board tips, mouth has to be closed or they will deduct some length (or not count it at all in some formats) also the identifier and inches need to be clearly visible or they may not count them. I'd hate to see some good catches not get counted.

1st suggestion is make sure the FC is fresh. Over time FC gains a lot of memory and likes to stay curled up. This is bad for Jerkbait fishing as well as trying to modulate the reel.

Is the back lash happening when you first cast it and locking the bait up mid air? Or towards the end of the cast before it hits the water?

If it happens early in the cast and locks your bait up mid air ( Ive lost a lot of good baits to this) you need to tighten your spool knob. If it's back lashing at the end of the cast you need to increase your brakes or with experience and time adjust your thumb pressure.

You can apply similar concept to any line type to get started or make quick adjustments in wind.
